Purpose:
Nuclear engineering and physics faculty and research scientists
from the Idaho State University, the University of Nevada, the University
of Michigan, and Texas Universities will meet with scientists and
engineers from Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory
as well as Los Alamos and Argonne National Laboratories to discuss
the use of accelerators in nuclear experiments for the Advanced
Fuel Cycle Initiative (AFCI) on August 21 and 22, 2003. Most of
the discussion will be centered on a series of near-term experiments
using gamma-n reactions produced by electron accelerators to drive
sub-critical systems at ISU, UT-Austin, and Texas A&M. However,
other topics will be included, such as ongoing and future European
experiments and other applications of accelerator-produced neutrons
for the AFCI. The goal of this workshop is to address practical
issues and to foster discussions of experiments and diagnostics
for these experiments. In addition, we hope to foster closer collaborations
between national labs and academia. Participants will discuss work
at their respective laboratories, share new ideas and future opportunities,
as well as collaborative possibilities.
