Idaho Accelerator Home Spark Trees
"Spark Trees" are a fun and interesting product of particle accelerators. They are created at the Idaho Accelerator Center using a high energy electron beam from a linear accelerator. The electrons penetrate the pastic, causing a very large electric charge to build up. This electric charge is released by striking the plastic with a sharp object. The regions where the electrons move escaping the plastic creates the "branches" and "trunk" of the spark tree. Like snowflakes, no two are exactly alike.

These spark trees are attractive, producing a brilliant display when light is shone through them. Place a spark tree on a multicolored light base for fascinating shades, gracing a desk or bookshelf with an intelligent and colorful display.

If you are interested in these spark trees, please contact Linda Egli.
